Aces is backfiring

For whatever reason, it's started to backfire on warmup (right after starting and holding at about 1500 RPM). It's also fluctuating at idle after driving. This started happening out of the blue. I've already swapped the plugs out, reset the timing, checked the valve lash and swapped out the fuel filter. I'm starting to wonder if my coil is on it's way out (I have a whole Crane Fireball ignition awaiting install), but it doesn't seem like that would be the issue here. Any suggestions?

For grins, here's my friend Steve & his wife's Celicas (his is the white one, hers is the red 'vert).

Edit: If anyone knows of one of those grilles shown for sale, let me know.

I almost bought the 'vert. I almost had my wife talked into it when Steve posted on a forum we're on saying he got a new car. I still curse him. His white car won best Celica at the Puget Sound Toyota Owner's Festival last year.

I just took the opportunity to flip through two old magazines in which my dad's old Celica TA40 was featured in. One the magazines had a special feature on JDM cars from 1971 all the way to the early 2000s. It was quite nice to see my dad's Celica and myself as a toddler featured in the same spread as the GT-R, NSX, Impreza 22B, S2K etc.
